What should you know about diaper irritant dermatitis?

The rash often looks red, sore, or shiny on skin covered by the nappy. It may spare the deepest skin folds when irritation comes mainly from wetness and rubbing. Frequent stools, diarrhoea, tight nappies, fragranced wipes, and recent antibiotics can make the skin more vulnerable. A rash with scattered spots beyond the main redness can have a yeast component, which needs different treatment.

Change wet or soiled nappies promptly. Rinse with lukewarm water or use a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, then pat rather than rub. Give the area brief air exposure during changes, and apply a thick protective barrier recommended by a pharmacist or clinician. Avoid talcum powder, fragranced products, and scrubbing.
