What should you know about a diagnostic otoscope?

A diagnostic otoscope is a handheld lighted instrument used to inspect the ear canal and eardrum during a clinical examination. It has a viewing head, a light source and a small disposable or reusable speculum that sits at the entrance of the canal.

The clinician can look for redness, swelling, fluid, discharge, wax, a foreign object or a change in the eardrum. The device does not diagnose every cause of ear pain or reduced hearing by itself; the findings are interpreted alongside symptoms and the rest of the examination. Brief pressure or mild discomfort can occur, especially when the ear is tender.

Tell the clinician about ear pain, discharge, fever, recent swimming, injury, hearing change and any object placed in the ear. Do not insert cotton buds or other objects to prepare the canal. Keep still while the otoscope is used, and tell the clinician if the examination hurts. A child may need a calm child health consultation so the ear can be checked safely.

Arrange medical assessment for persistent ear pain, new hearing loss, repeated discharge or symptoms after an injury. Seek urgent care for severe pain with swelling behind the ear, sudden marked hearing loss, a serious head injury or a very unwell child. A GP consultation can help decide whether further testing or treatment is needed.

Ask what was seen in the ear, whether wax or infection affected the view, whether hearing should be tested, and which symptoms should prompt a follow-up visit.
