Short answer

A molar pregnancy is assessed with ultrasound and pregnancy-hormone blood tests, then usually confirmed by examining pregnancy tissue after it is removed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main assessments
Ultrasound and serial hCG blood tests are interpreted together.
Confirmation
A pathology laboratory examines removed pregnancy tissue.
Follow-up
Continued hCG monitoring checks whether molar tissue remains active.

How a molar pregnancy is identified

This condition develops when placental tissue grows abnormally. Symptoms and hormone levels can raise concern, but the diagnosis depends on the overall clinical picture and the laboratory examination of tissue.

What the assessment can show

Ultrasound may show abnormal placental tissue, an unexpected pattern of development or no developing fetus, depending on the type of molar pregnancy. A blood test measures human chorionic gonadotropin, known as hCG. A level that does not match the expected pregnancy pattern needs interpretation with the scan and clinical findings.

Vaginal bleeding, severe nausea and vomiting, or a uterus measuring differently from expected can occur with a molar pregnancy. Each can have other causes in pregnancy, so none should be used alone to label the condition.

What happens after diagnosis

The usual next step is removal of the abnormal tissue under specialist care. The tissue is sent to pathology, and hCG blood tests continue afterward because the trend shows whether molar tissue remains active. Keep every scheduled blood test even if bleeding has stopped and you feel well.

Use the contraception plan recommended by the treating team during monitoring, since a new pregnancy raises hCG and can make the results difficult to interpret. Ask when attempting another pregnancy would be medically appropriate for your circumstances.

When urgent assessment is needed

Seek urgent care for heavy vaginal bleeding, fainting, severe abdominal or pelvic pain, breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, or vomiting that prevents you from keeping fluids down. During follow-up, report renewed bleeding or other symptoms specified by your specialist rather than waiting for the next scheduled test.

Questions for your care team

Ask what the ultrasound and pathology show, how your hCG results will be monitored, where blood tests can be done and who will contact you with results. Also clarify which contraception is suitable, what symptoms require an urgent call, and what would happen if hCG stops falling or begins to rise.

Questions people ask

Does bleeding in pregnancy mean it is a molar pregnancy?

Bleeding in pregnancy does not establish a molar pregnancy. A molar pregnancy can present with vaginal bleeding, but bleeding has several possible causes. Ultrasound, hCG testing and tissue examination help establish what is happening.

Why are blood tests needed after the tissue is removed?

Tracking hCG shows whether hormone-producing molar tissue is still active. Results that do not fall as expected may lead the specialist to arrange further assessment or treatment.

Can treatment be needed after the initial procedure?

Additional treatment can sometimes be needed. If follow-up indicates persistent disease, the specialist may recommend an option such as chemotherapy. The choice depends on the hCG pattern and clinical assessment.
