After a DHI hair transplant, expect tiny crusts and mild swelling first, careful washing during the early healing period, and gradual hair growth over the following months. The implanted hairs may shed before new growth becomes visible, so early changes do not show the final result. On the procedure day, follicles are placed into the thinning areas with an implanter pen after donor hairs have been prepared. The scalp can look pink, dotted or slightly swollen. During the first few days, protect the grafts from rubbing, pressure and direct sun. Swelling can move toward the forehead before settling.

Over the first week, small scabs or crusts may form around the grafts. Gentle cleansing helps remove them as the scalp heals, but picking can injure the area.
