What should you know about dexamethasone for sore throat?

Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid that calms inflammation. It may lessen pain or swelling for some people, yet it does not kill bacteria and does not remove viruses. Sore throat can occur with a common cold, influenza, COVID-19, reflux, allergies, glandular fever, strep throat or tonsillitis, and those causes need different decisions.

A clinician weighs swallowing ability, examination findings, other illnesses and medicine interactions before recommending it. Steroids can affect mood, sleep, blood sugar and the body’s response to infection.

Drink cool or warm fluids, choose soft foods, rest, and use suitable pain relief as directed. Do not take leftover dexamethasone or combine medicines without checking. If antibiotics are prescribed for a bacterial cause, take them exactly as directed; a steroid does not replace antibiotic treatment.

Arrange assessment if symptoms are severe, recurrent, or not settling. The clinician can look for tonsil swelling, dehydration and signs that a specific infection needs treatment.
