Device Used to Monitor Fetal Heart Rate

Two external sensors are usually held against the abdomen with belts: one detects the fetal heartbeat and the other records tightening of the womb. The tracing shows changes in heart rate alongside contractions and fetal movement. A non-stress test is a type of external monitoring; clinicians interpret the pattern with your pregnancy and symptoms in mind.

Wear comfortable clothing and tell staff if the belts feel too tight or if you need to change position. You may be asked to press a button when the baby moves. Try to remain comfortable while the recording is made, but normal movement and questions are welcome.

Contact your maternity unit promptly if you notice reduced fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions or severe abdominal pain. Do not wait for a home monitor or a routine appointment when symptoms feel urgent; an in-person assessment may be needed.

Ask why monitoring is recommended, how long the recording may take, what the tracing is assessing, and what will happen if the result needs repeating or closer review.
