What should you know about developed sun allergy?

Sun allergy is a name used for several reactions in which exposed skin becomes inflamed after sunlight. Polymorphic light eruption is one common pattern. Small bumps, patches, or blisters may appear on the neck, chest, arms, or other uncovered areas, often after a period with less sun exposure. The rash can itch or burn and may settle when exposure stops, but its appearance can vary.

A new light-sensitive rash can also be related to a medicine, a skincare product, or another skin condition. The timing, distribution, photographs, and your medication list help a clinician separate these possibilities from heat rash or ordinary sunburn.

Move into shade, cover the affected skin with tightly woven clothing, and use broad-spectrum sunscreen that you tolerate. Avoid deliberate tanning while the rash is active. Keep a note of when exposure occurred, which areas reacted, and any new medicines or products. Do not scratch blisters; gentle cleansing and a cool compress may reduce irritation.
