Desitin for heat rash: what to know

Desitin is a zinc oxide barrier cream. A thin layer can reduce rubbing and shield skin from sweat, especially where clothing or skin folds keep the area damp. It does not remove the blocked sweat ducts that cause heat rash, and a thick, occlusive coating may hold in heat for some people. Avoid applying it over broken skin, infected-looking areas, or a large body surface without clinical advice.

Move to a cooler setting, loosen or remove sweaty clothing, and let the skin air-dry. Use a cool damp cloth briefly, then pat rather than rub. Choose loose, breathable clothing and change out of wet garments. If you use Desitin, apply a small amount to clean, dry skin and stop if burning or worsening redness develops. Do not use it as a substitute for a clinician’s assessment when the rash is spreading or recurrent.
