Description of tinea versicolor

The patches often develop on the chest, back, shoulders, neck, or upper arms. They may be white, pink, tan, or brown, and nearby patches can have different shades. Fine scale may be easier to see when the skin is gently scratched. Mild itching can occur, particularly with heat or sweating, but some people notice only the colour change. Tinea versicolor is caused by yeast that normally lives on skin; it is not a sign of poor hygiene and usually does not spread through ordinary contact.
