Description of impetigo rash

Impetigo is a superficial bacterial infection. It commonly affects the face, especially around the nose and mouth, but can occur anywhere bacteria enter irritated or broken skin. A blistering form may leave thin-roofed blisters, while a non-blistering form produces crusted sores. Eczema and scratching can damage the skin barrier and make infection more likely, but a crusted rash still needs proper assessment.

Gently wash the area, pat it dry and cover sores with clean clothing or a dressing when practical. Wash hands after touching the rash, keep nails short, and do not share towels, bedding, razors or cosmetics. Avoid picking crusts. A clinician may recommend topical antibiotic therapy for limited disease or antibiotics for a more extensive infection; use treatment exactly as directed.

Arrange medical assessment promptly because impetigo spreads easily and may need prescription treatment. Seek urgent help if redness, swelling or pain is rapidly increasing, the person develops fever or looks unwell, the infection is near an eye, or there are signs of dehydration. Reassessment is needed if new sores continue appearing despite treatment.
