Description of hand, foot and mouth rash

This pattern is commonly linked with a contagious viral illness, especially in children. Spots may also appear on the buttocks, legs or arms. Mouth ulcers can make drinking and eating uncomfortable, while the skin rash may be mildly itchy or tender. A rash alone cannot confirm the cause because other conditions can resemble it.

Offer frequent sips of fluid and choose soft, cool foods if the mouth is sore. Keep blisters clean, avoid scratching, wash hands after contact with saliva or stool, and do not share cups, towels or utensils. Keep the child home from close-contact activities while fever or feeling unwell continues, following local school guidance. A clinician can check hydration and the appearance of the mouth and skin.

Seek prompt medical care if the person cannot drink, urinates much less than usual, seems unusually sleepy, has breathing difficulty, develops severe headache or neck stiffness, or the rash becomes rapidly swollen, very painful or infected-looking. Arrange an assessment when the diagnosis is uncertain or symptoms are not settling.
