Description of Braxton Hicks Contractions

Short answer
Braxton Hicks contractions are irregular practice tightenings of the womb that do not steadily build like labour contractions.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the sensation can mean
Your abdomen may feel firm, tight or briefly uncomfortable, then soften again. Episodes can happen after activity, sex, a full bladder or dehydration, and they may be more noticeable later in pregnancy. They usually remain unpredictable rather than becoming progressively closer, longer and stronger.
What you can do
Pause and change position, drink water, empty your bladder and notice whether the tightening settles. Rest on your side if comfortable and time several episodes if you are unsure what is happening. Do not use the pattern alone to diagnose labour; contact your maternity team for personalised advice.
When to seek care
Seek urgent maternity advice for regular or intensifying tightenings, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, pelvic pressure, persistent lower-back pain, fever, or reduced fetal movement. If these symptoms occur before your clinician considers the pregnancy full term, assessment is especially important because they can accompany preterm labour.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how to time contractions, which maternity number to call, what movement pattern is expected for your baby, and whether your personal pregnancy history changes when you should be assessed.

Questions people ask
Can Braxton Hicks contractions hurt?
They can feel uncomfortable or cramp-like, although the intensity varies. A painful or steadily worsening pattern should be discussed with your maternity team.
How can I tell if contractions are changing?
Time them and look for a regular pattern, increasing strength, longer episodes or shorter gaps. Contact maternity care if that pattern develops or if warning symptoms appear.
