Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra in Skin of Colour

DPN often forms on the cheeks, temples, forehead, neck, or upper chest. On deeper skin tones, the papules may look dark brown, deep brown, or black, while inflammation after rubbing can create a temporary change in surrounding colour. Lesions may be smooth, rough, rounded, or attached by a narrow base.

A clinician should assess a spot that is new, unusual, or changing because not every dark papule is DPN. The diagnosis is generally based on the lesion's appearance and history, with further assessment when the pattern is unclear.

If DPN is not irritated, leaving it alone is medically reasonable. Do not cut, burn, or apply strong acids at home. Injury can trigger inflammation and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation, which may last longer than the original irritation.

A cautious approach may involve treating selected lesions, observing healing, and then deciding whether further treatment is appropriate. Sun protection and gentle aftercare help reduce avoidable colour contrast during recovery.

Arrange a review if one papule grows quickly, bleeds, crusts, becomes persistently painful, or develops a sore that does not heal. These features call for examination and do not by themselves identify the cause. Seek advice as well if a treatment site becomes increasingly swollen, hot, painful, or produces discharge.

Ask how confident the diagnosis is, what pigment changes are possible with each option, how the treatment area will be protected, and what signs would mean that healing is not following the expected course.
