What should you know about dermatofibroma treatment?

Dermatofibromas are firm nodules formed in the skin. A dermatologist first checks whether the lesion has the expected appearance and whether it has remained stable. A confirmed, symptom-free nodule may be left in place. Monitoring means knowing its usual colour, size and texture so that a meaningful change is easier to spot.

If treatment is appropriate, complete surgical excision is one option. The area is numbed, the nodule is removed, and the wound is closed or allowed to heal according to its size and position. A scar can remain, and removing a lesion for comfort or appearance involves weighing that scar against the original concern. Tissue may be examined when diagnosis needs confirmation.

Bring a list of medicines and mention allergies, bleeding problems, immune conditions and previous reactions to anaesthetic. Ask how long the wound may need protection and how to reduce friction while it heals. Avoid picking at the nodule or applying unprescribed acids or strong creams, which can inflame the skin and obscure its features.
