What should you know about dermatofibroma histiocytoma?

This lesion forms from fibrous tissue in the skin. It often feels firm or rubbery, may look pink, brown, or darker than nearby skin, and can show a small inward dimpling when gently pinched. A clinician may recognise its pattern by examining the surface and texture. A biopsy can be considered when the appearance is unusual or the diagnosis is uncertain.

Avoid squeezing, cutting, or repeatedly rubbing the nodule. Photograph it in consistent lighting and note any change in size, colour, firmness, bleeding, or tenderness. Arrange a routine dermatology review if it is new, bothersome, or difficult to distinguish from another skin lump. If removal is chosen because of irritation or uncertainty, surgical excision removes the lesion for examination, but it leaves a scar that should be discussed beforehand.

Seek prompt medical assessment for a lump that grows quickly, develops marked colour variation, becomes persistently painful, ulcerates, bleeds without being injured, or looks noticeably different from your other lesions. These features do not identify the cause by themselves; they indicate that an in-person examination is needed.

Ask whether the lesion has the typical features of dermatofibroma, whether monitoring is reasonable, and whether a biopsy would clarify the diagnosis. If removal is discussed, ask where the scar may sit, how wound care works, and what change should trigger a follow-up visit.
