What should you know about Dermalogica hyaluronic acid?

Short answer

Dermalogica hyaluronic acid is a topical moisturising ingredient that helps the skin hold water; it is not the same as a hyaluronic acid injection for a joint.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it means

Hyaluronic acid is a substance that attracts and retains water. In a serum or moisturiser, it sits on or near the skin surface and supports a more hydrated, supple feel. Dermalogica products may combine it with other ingredients, so check the product label if you have sensitive skin or known allergies.

A topical product cannot be assumed to reach a painful joint or rebuild cartilage. Joint injections use a medical formulation placed by a qualified clinician for a specific indication. The product name, concentration, preparation and route are different from facial skincare, even though both contain hyaluronic acid.

How to use a topical product thoughtfully

Apply the product as directed to clean skin, then use a moisturiser if the routine calls for one. Introduce a new product gradually and stop if you develop marked burning, swelling, blistering or a spreading rash. Avoid applying it to broken skin unless a clinician has advised you to do so.

If you are considering hyaluronic acid because of knee, shoulder or other joint pain, arrange an assessment rather than applying skincare to the area as a treatment. A clinician can examine the joint, consider causes such as an injury or arthritis, and explain whether physiotherapy, activity changes, medication or an injection is appropriate.

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical advice for a joint that becomes suddenly very swollen, hot or red, especially with fever or feeling unwell. Urgent assessment is also sensible after a significant injury, when you cannot bear weight, or when a limb becomes numb, pale or unusually cold.

For skincare, seek urgent help for facial swelling, wheezing, trouble breathing or faintness after use. Persistent irritation, worsening pain or symptoms that interfere with sleep and normal movement deserve a clinical review even without these warning signs.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which condition may be causing your joint symptoms, what examination or imaging is useful, and which treatments match your goals. If an injection is discussed, ask what medicine will be used, what benefit to expect, how the procedure is performed, and which symptoms should prompt follow-up.

Questions people ask

Can Dermalogica hyaluronic acid treat knee pain?

No. A topical skincare product is intended for the skin and should not be relied on to treat pain inside a knee or another joint.

Is hyaluronic acid skincare the same as an injection?

No. They differ in formulation, route and clinical purpose. An injection must be considered and administered by a qualified clinician.

What should I do if a product irritates my skin?

Stop using it and gently rinse the area. Get medical advice if the reaction is severe, spreading or accompanied by facial swelling or breathing symptoms.
