Lip filler: what to know before treatment

Lip filler is placed in selected areas of the lips or surrounding border to influence fullness, contour, symmetry, or hydration-related appearance. Hyaluronic acid filler is commonly discussed because it provides structure and can be adjusted by a trained clinician. The result is shaped by natural lip movement, existing volume, skin quality, and the amount and location of product. Filler cannot reproduce every reference image or correct all facial imbalance.

A consultation should cover cold sores, allergies, medicines, previous filler, dental treatment, active infection, and any tendency to form raised scars. Wrinkles or facial volume loss elsewhere may need a separate plan rather than more product in the lips.

Choose a licensed medical practitioner who can show the product packaging, explain the injection plan, and describe alternatives. Ask what will happen if you dislike the shape or develop a complication. Do not stop prescribed medicine without medical advice, and tell the injector about planned dental work or recent illness.

Swelling, bruising, tenderness, and temporary unevenness are common after lip injections. Follow the clinic's instructions, avoid unnecessary pressure or rubbing, and wait for swelling to settle before judging symmetry. Alternatives may include a collagen biostimulator for a different treatment goal, Botox for selected perioral movement, or fat transfer when a surgical approach is suitable.

Contact the clinic promptly for worsening pain, unusual paleness or darkening of the lip, increasing firmness, spreading redness, blistering, or swelling that is becoming more severe. Seek emergency care for sudden visual change, severe headache, weakness, confusion, or difficulty speaking after a facial injection.

Ask which areas will be injected, what degree of fullness fits your features, which filler is proposed, how cold-sore risk is handled, and what aftercare is required. Ask how asymmetry or an unwanted result would be evaluated and who provides urgent help.
