What should you know about derma pen plasma?

A plasma device creates a small arc above or near the skin. The heat can produce tiny crusted points and a controlled surface injury, followed by healing and remodelling. This is different from a microneedling pen, which uses a cartridge of fine needles to create channels in the skin.

Treatment goals depend on the device and area. A plasma pen may be offered for selected cosmetic concerns, but heat injury can cause prolonged redness, infection, scarring, or darker or lighter pigmentation. The eye area and pigment-prone skin require particular caution, and a qualified clinician should assess whether the proposed use is appropriate.

Ask for the exact device name, intended indication, expected crusting, and alternatives. Tell the clinician about active skin disease, cold sores, recent tanning, medicines, a tendency to form raised scars, and previous pigment changes after inflammation. Do not proceed over broken or infected skin.

After treatment, leave crusts undisturbed and follow the clinic’s cleansing and moisturising instructions. Avoid picking, makeup, swimming, heat, exfoliating acids, retinoids, and direct sun until the surface has healed. Use the recommended sun protection afterward because inflammation can trigger pigment changes.

Contact the treating clinic for increasing pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, worsening swelling, or an unpleasant odour from the treated area. Seek prompt review for blistering, eye pain, vision changes, or pigment changes that continue to spread. Emergency care is needed for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue.

Ask whether the device is a plasma device or a different energy treatment, what tissue effect is expected, and why it suits your concern. Confirm operator training, eye protection, infection control, aftercare, expected crust duration, pigment risk for your skin tone, and the plan if healing is delayed.
