Depression, stress, and anxiety explained

Short answer
Depression, stress, and anxiety can overlap, yet persistent low mood, fear, or exhaustion deserves an assessment rather than self-diagnosis.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Recognising the overlap
Stress often describes the mind and body responding to pressure. Anxiety may involve fear, alertness, physical tension, or repeated worrying. Depression commonly brings low mood or loss of interest, alongside changes in sleep, energy, concentration, or appetite. One person can experience more than one of these patterns. Feeling anxious is not proof of depression, and depression does not mean that every anxious feeling has the same cause.
Ways to start getting help
Keep a brief record of mood, worries, sleep, energy, triggers, and how symptoms affect work or relationships. A primary-care clinician can review the pattern and consider talking therapy, practical stress support, or medication where appropriate. Protect basic routines, reduce avoidable demands, use slow breathing during surges of tension, and tell someone you trust what is happening. Avoid using alcohol or unprescribed medicines to manage distress.
When support cannot wait
Get emergency help if you have thoughts of suicide, feel unable to stay safe, experience hallucinations, or are so distressed that basic care is not possible. Seek prompt medical advice when symptoms rapidly intensify, sleep becomes severely disrupted, or panic-like symptoms include chest pain, fainting, or serious breathing difficulty. A clinician can separate emotional symptoms from physical illness.
Take these questions along
Which symptoms point to depression, anxiety, stress, or another condition? Could my sleep or physical health be contributing? What support is available now, and what warning signs should prompt urgent contact?

Questions people ask
Are stress and depression the same thing?
No. Stress is a response to pressure, while depression is a broader pattern of mood and functioning changes; they can coexist.
When should anxiety and low mood be assessed?
Arrange care when symptoms persist, interfere with daily life, or become difficult to control. Seek emergency help for immediate safety concerns.
