Depression and headaches: what to know

Short answer
Depression can occur with headaches, but headache has many possible causes and needs assessment in its wider context.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the symptoms can overlap
Depression may present with physical discomfort, including headaches, alongside low mood, reduced enjoyment, low energy, sleep changes, or difficulty concentrating. Tension in the scalp, neck, or jaw, dehydration, missed meals, eye strain, stress, and disrupted sleep can also contribute to head pain.
A headache does not by itself establish depression. Note when pain starts, where it is felt, how long it lasts, associated symptoms, sleep quality, meals, fluids, and any pain medicine. [Difficulty Concentrating](/symptoms/difficulty-concentrating/) and [Difficulty Sleeping](/symptoms/difficulty-sleeping/) can help describe the broader pattern.
Practical steps
Arrange a clinical review if headaches recur, change pattern, affect work, or occur with persistent low mood. A clinician can assess neurological symptoms, blood pressure, medicines, sleep, stress, and mental health. Keep a headache diary and follow the label or clinician advice for pain medicines; frequent use can itself complicate headaches.
Try regular meals, water, screen breaks, a consistent sleep routine, and gentle neck or shoulder relaxation. Addressing depression, if present, may involve talking therapy, medication, or both.
Urgent warning signs
Seek emergency care for a sudden severe headache, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, fainting, confusion, seizure, fever with a stiff neck, repeated vomiting, or a headache after a significant head injury. Get urgent mental-health help for thoughts of suicide or self-harm or if you cannot stay safe.
Questions for your doctor
Does my headache pattern suggest a primary headache or another cause? Could sleep, mood, medicines, or dehydration be contributing? Which symptoms should prompt urgent review? How can we treat the headache and any depression safely together?

Questions people ask
Does a headache mean I have depression?
No. Headaches are common and have many possible causes. Depression is considered from a wider pattern that may include mood, interest, sleep, energy, and thinking changes.
Can poor sleep worsen headaches?
Yes. Disrupted or insufficient sleep can make headaches harder to manage, and headaches can in turn interfere with sleep. Both deserve attention during an assessment.
