Short answer

Depression can make dark circles look more noticeable through sleep disruption, fatigue, dehydration, rubbing and changes in self-care, but dark circles also have many non-psychiatric causes.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

Depression can make dark circles look more noticeable through sleep disruption, fatigue, dehydration, rubbing and changes in self-care, but dark circles also have many non-psychiatric causes. Their appearance does not establish that someone has depression, and depression does not explain every change around the eyes.

What the change may mean

Under-eye darkness may come from pigment in the skin, visible blood vessels, a hollow that creates a shadow, or puffiness that changes the light on the area. Poor or irregular sleep can make the skin look dull and the under-eye vessels more visible. Dehydration and frequent eye rubbing can add to the tired appearance. Genetics, ageing, sun exposure, allergies and eczema can also contribute. Atopic dermatitis around the eyes may cause itch, dryness and rubbing; see [Atopic Dermatitis](/conditions/atopic-dermatitis/) for related skin symptoms.

A tear-trough hollow is a structural indentation beneath the lower eyelid. It can cast a shadow even when the skin itself is not unusually dark. More detail is available in [Tear Trough Hollows](/conditions/tear-trough-hollows/).

What you can do

Start with consistent sleep and regular fluids, and use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser if the skin feels dry. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing the eyelids. Sunglasses and daily sun protection can help limit further pigment changes. If allergies cause itching or watering, treating that trigger may reduce rubbing, but eye-area products should be chosen carefully because this skin is sensitive.

If low mood, loss of interest, sleep problems or difficulty managing daily care continue, arrange support with a qualified mental-health professional or doctor. For persistent darkness, a clinician can distinguish pigment, vessels, puffiness and hollowness before discussing treatment. Options may include topical care or procedures; [Under-Eye Filler](/treatments/injectables/tear-trough-filler/) is relevant only when volume loss is a main contributor and requires a suitably trained medical injector.

When to seek care

Seek medical advice if the change is new and mainly affects one eye, or if it comes with pain, marked swelling, redness, discharge, a rash, vision changes or injury. Arrange an assessment when darkness persists despite addressing sleep and irritation, especially if you also have unusual tiredness, pale skin or other new symptoms.

If depression includes thoughts of self-harm, feeling unable to stay safe or an immediate crisis, contact local emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department now.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the darkness appears to be pigment, visible vessels, irritation, puffiness or a tear-trough shadow; whether allergies or dermatitis need treatment; and which eye-area products or procedures are appropriate for your skin. If depression symptoms are present, ask what support is available alongside skin care.

Questions people ask

Do dark circles prove that someone has depression?

No. Dark circles are a nonspecific appearance change with many possible causes, and they cannot diagnose depression.

Can treating depression improve dark circles?

It may help when sleep disruption, fatigue, dehydration or reduced self-care are contributing, but structural hollows, pigment, allergies or dermatitis may remain.

What are tear troughs?

Tear troughs are hollows beneath the lower eyelids that can create a shadow and make the area look darker; they are described in [Tear Trough Hollows](/conditions/tear-trough-hollows/).
