Depression and body pain: what to know

Short answer
Depression can occur with body pain because mood, sleep, stress and pain processing interact, but new or persistent pain still needs a medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How mood and pain can interact
Depression may present with aching muscles, headaches, back pain or a general sense of heaviness. Pain can disrupt sleep and movement, while poor sleep, stress and low activity can make pain feel harder to manage. Depression may also reduce the energy needed for pacing, appointments and rehabilitation.
Pain does not establish that depression is the cause. A clinician may assess where the pain is, when it began, what changes it, associated symptoms, medicines and mood. Physical conditions, injury, nerve problems, inflammation and medicine effects remain possible explanations. Fatigue and difficulty concentrating can accompany either pain or depression.
What may help
Arrange an assessment for pain that is new, persistent, worsening or limiting movement, sleep or work. Keep a short record of location, severity, triggers, sleep, activity and mood. Gentle movement within your ability, regular meals, pacing and a consistent sleep routine may support function; stop and seek advice if activity causes concerning symptoms.
Discuss pain relief with a clinician or pharmacist, particularly if you take antidepressants, sedatives, blood thinners or other medicines. Psychological therapy and physical rehabilitation can complement medical treatment when pain and low mood reinforce each other. Avoid increasing pain medicines or mixing them with alcohol without advice.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical care for chest pain, severe breathlessness, sudden weakness or numbness, new loss of bladder or bowel control, a serious injury, fever with a very unwell feeling, or pain that is sudden and severe. Seek immediate mental-health help for suicidal thoughts or inability to stay safe. Otherwise, book a clinician review when pain and low mood are affecting daily life.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what causes should be checked, whether medicines or sleep are contributing, which movement is suitable, how pain and mood will be treated together, and which changes require urgent review.

Questions people ask
Can depression cause physical pain?
Depression can occur with aches and other physical symptoms, but pain has many possible causes and should not automatically be attributed to mood.
What if pain makes depression worse?
Tell your clinician about both. A combined plan may address pain relief, sleep, movement, mood and coping rather than treating each concern in isolation.
