Dengue, chikungunya and Zika: how do they differ?

All three illnesses may begin with a flu-like pattern, so symptoms alone cannot reliably identify which virus is responsible. Chikungunya is often associated with prominent joint pain, while dengue can carry a particular concern about bleeding and changes during the period when fever improves. Zika may be mild or unnoticed in some people, but it deserves specific medical advice during pregnancy or when pregnancy is possible. Travel, mosquito exposure, local circulation, and examination help guide the assessment.

Arrange a GP Consultation if fever follows travel or mosquito exposure, or if aches are substantial or persistent. Rest, drink fluids, and prevent additional bites with repellent, covered clothing, and screened rooms. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, possible pregnancy, recent travel, and all medicines. Avoid self-treating with products that may worsen bleeding unless a clinician says they are suitable.

Seek urgent care for bleeding, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, faintness, breathing difficulty, confusion, or inability to keep fluids down. Prompt advice is also needed for fever during pregnancy or after travel when Zika exposure is possible.
