What should you know about deltoid kinesio tape?

The deltoid helps lift and position the arm. Tape placed over or around it may change skin sensation and remind you to control movement, but it does not repair a tendon, restore joint stability, or replace an assessment. A physiotherapist can select the direction, tension, and anchor points according to your movement pattern. Similar taping approaches are used in rehabilitation for problems such as ankle sprain and patellofemoral pain, although the body area and goal differ.

Apply tape to clean, dry, intact skin and avoid open wounds, rashes, or irritated areas. Follow the technique shown by a trained professional rather than pulling it tightly. Remove it slowly if itching, burning, blistering, numbness, or unusual pain develops. Check the skin after removal and pause use if irritation continues. Pair taping with the prescribed exercises and activity changes; tape should not be used to push through shoulder pain.

Arrange an assessment for persistent shoulder pain, weakness, restricted movement, night pain, or symptoms after a fall. Seek prompt care for a visibly deformed shoulder, sudden inability to lift the arm, spreading numbness, a cold or discoloured hand, or severe pain after injury.
