What should you know about delivery after water breaks?

Amniotic fluid may come as a gush or a continuing trickle, and it can be difficult to distinguish from urine. The team may ask about colour, smell, time of leakage, contractions and fetal movement, then assess you and the baby. Fluid that is green, brown, bloody or foul-smelling needs prompt attention. If the waters break before the pregnancy is ready for birth, the plan may involve observation, treatment and specialist review.

Use a maternity pad rather than a tampon, note the time and appearance of the fluid, and avoid vaginal intercourse until your team advises otherwise. Follow instructions about eating, drinking, bathing and attending assessment. Do not drive yourself if you feel unwell or labour is advanced. Call your maternity unit urgently for fever, chills, worsening abdominal pain, a bad-smelling discharge, heavy bleeding, green or brown fluid, reduced fetal movement or regular contractions. Call emergency services if you feel faint, have severe pain, see something protruding from the vagina or think birth is imminent.

Ask how the fluid will be confirmed, whether you need observation or admission, how infection will be monitored, and what signs mean you should return immediately. Clarify the plan for labour, movement, meals and follow-up.
