Deep vein thrombosis treatment: what to know

A DVT is a clot in a deep vein, often in a leg but sometimes in an arm. Anticoagulants reduce the blood’s ability to form or extend clots; they do not dissolve a clot instantly. Your clinician chooses a medicine after considering kidney function, other medicines, pregnancy, bleeding history and the clot’s location. Some people need blood tests or medication reviews. Compression advice, movement guidance and treatment of a contributing problem may also be part of the plan.

Take each dose exactly as prescribed and do not stop it without medical advice. Tell dentists, pharmacists and other clinicians that you take an anticoagulant. Check before using anti-inflammatory painkillers, supplements or herbal products because some increase bleeding risk. Keep follow-up appointments and ask what to do after a missed dose. Gentle regular movement is often encouraged, but follow the activity advice given for your clot and symptoms.

Get emergency help for coughing blood, chest pain, sudden breathlessness, fainting or severe new weakness. While taking an anticoagulant, seek urgent help for bleeding that will not stop, vomiting blood, black stools, a severe headache after an injury, or a serious fall. Contact your treating clinician promptly for worsening limb swelling, new pain, unusual bruising or repeated nosebleeds.
