De Quervain's tenosynovitis home remedies: what may help

Short answer

Home care for de Quervain's tenosynovitis focuses on reducing irritating thumb and wrist movements, using cold, and supporting the wrist and thumb while symptoms settle.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What can you do at home?

The aim is to calm the irritated tendon coverings on the thumb side of the wrist, not to force the joint through pain. Improvement can take time, especially if lifting, gripping or repetitive hand use continues.

What de Quervain's tenosynovitis means

De Quervain's tenosynovitis affects the tendons that move the thumb along the wrist. Irritation in the narrow passage where these tendons run can cause soreness or swelling near the base of the thumb, with pain during grasping, pinching, twisting or lifting. The discomfort may travel a short distance up the forearm.

Common triggers include repeatedly picking up a child, wringing cloths, using a phone, gardening or other tasks that combine thumb movement with wrist deviation. A diagnosis may require an examination because pain in this area can also have other causes. Read more about [De Quervain's Tenosynovitis](/conditions/de-quervain-tenosynovitis/).

Home measures to try

Pause or modify activities that reproduce the pain. Keep objects close to your body, use both hands for heavier items, and avoid lifting with the thumb spread wide. When caring for a baby, support the head and body with the palms rather than gripping under the thumbs.

Apply a wrapped cold pack to the painful area for short periods, leaving time between applications and protecting the skin. A thumb-and-wrist splint can limit the movements that strain the tendons; it should fit comfortably and allow normal finger circulation. See [Splinting](/treatments/trauma-and-fracture-care/splinting/) for more information.

Keep the other fingers and elbow moving gently, but stop an exercise that increases sharp pain, tingling or swelling. A hand therapist can tailor exercises and show safer ways to grip and lift. Explore [Hand Therapy](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/hand-therapy/) if symptoms persist or daily tasks remain difficult.

When to seek medical care

Arrange an assessment if pain is not easing after a period of activity modification, if it keeps returning, or if you cannot use the thumb and wrist for ordinary tasks. Seek prompt care after an injury with marked swelling, deformity, severe pain or loss of movement. Urgent assessment is also sensible when the hand becomes numb, unusually pale or blue, or increasingly hot and red.

A clinician may discuss options such as a properly fitted splint, hand therapy or a cortisone injection. If non-surgical care does not provide enough relief, [Cortisone Injection](/treatments/non-surgical-orthopedics/cortisone-injection/) and [De Quervain's Release](/treatments/reconstructive-orthopedic-surgery/de-quervain-release/) are examples of treatments that may be considered after assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what movements are most likely aggravating your tendons, how long to use a thumb-and-wrist splint, and which exercises are appropriate for your examination findings. You can also ask whether another cause of [Wrist Pain](/symptoms/wrist-pain/) should be checked and what change would mean you should return sooner.

Questions people ask

Can I massage de Quervain's tenosynovitis at home?

Avoid deep or forceful massage directly over the painful tendon area. Gentle movement of the fingers may be more comfortable, while persistent pain deserves an assessment before adding exercises or massage.

Should I wear a splint overnight?

Some people find a comfortable thumb-and-wrist splint useful during sleep or activities, but the best duration and fit depend on your symptoms. It should not cause numbness, colour change, pressure marks or increased pain.

When might home care be insufficient?

Home measures may not be enough when pain continues despite reducing triggers, interferes with work or childcare, or is accompanied by weakness, numbness, significant swelling or an injury.
