Prostate cancer commonly presents with spread to bones or lymph nodes and can involve other organs. A distant deposit remains prostate cancer under the microscope. Bone involvement may weaken a particular area or irritate nearby nerves, but not every scan finding causes symptoms.

Tests usually establish the tissue diagnosis, map the affected areas and assess how the cancer is behaving. Difficulty passing urine can occur when the prostate or nearby tissue obstructs urine flow, yet urinary symptoms also have non-cancerous causes and need clinical assessment.

Discuss treatment that acts throughout the body, because distant sites need systemic control. The team may also recommend radiotherapy for painful or vulnerable bone disease, treatment directed at the prostate in selected circumstances, or targeted radioisotope therapy when its specific criteria fit.

Ask whether bone-strengthening therapy is appropriate and what dental checks are needed beforehand. Record pain location, walking changes and urinary flow, and bring all medicines and supplements to appointments so interactions and side effects can be anticipated.

Go for urgent assessment if you cannot pass urine, develop new leg weakness or numbness, lose bladder or bowel control, or have new severe back pain. These symptoms can reflect urinary blockage or pressure on the spinal cord and should be evaluated quickly.

Tell the oncology service promptly about fever during treatment, rapidly worsening pain, repeated falls, new confusion, persistent vomiting or inability to drink. Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, chest pain, collapse or sudden loss of movement.

Ask where disease has been confirmed, what the biopsy says about tumour features, which treatment addresses all sites, whether any area needs local protection, how bone health will be monitored, which side effects deserve a same-day call, and how the team will judge whether treatment is helping.
