What should you know about DAS28 and rheumatoid arthritis?

Short answer
DAS28 is a clinical scoring method that helps estimate rheumatoid arthritis activity and guide treatment discussions.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What DAS28 means
DAS28 brings together examination findings from a group of joints, a blood marker of inflammation, and the person’s own assessment of disease activity. The result is a snapshot of inflammatory arthritis activity at that visit. It can help a rheumatology team compare change over time, but it does not describe every aspect of rheumatoid arthritis, such as fatigue, damage already present, or symptoms from another condition. A score should be interpreted alongside symptoms, examination, blood tests, and treatment history.
How to prepare and respond
Before an appointment, note morning stiffness, swollen or painful joints, tiredness, function, and any recent infection or medicine change. Tell the clinician if symptoms fluctuate because a single visit may not reflect your usual pattern. Take rheumatoid arthritis medicines exactly as prescribed unless your care team changes the plan. Treatment may include disease-modifying medicines, monitoring, rehabilitation, and anti-inflammatory medication for symptom relief; the target is discussed individually.
When to seek care
Contact your rheumatology team if joint swelling, stiffness, pain, or function is worsening despite treatment, or if medicine side effects appear. Seek urgent care for a hot, very swollen joint with fever, sudden severe weakness, chest pain, or breathing difficulty. These problems need assessment independently of a DAS28 result.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which DAS28 version and tests were used, what the result means alongside your symptoms, and when it should be repeated. Discuss whether persistent swelling suggests active inflammation, how treatment goals will be measured, and what to do if your symptoms change between appointments.

Questions people ask
Does DAS28 diagnose rheumatoid arthritis?
No; it helps assess activity in people being evaluated or treated for rheumatoid arthritis and is interpreted with other clinical information.
Can a lower score mean every symptom has gone?
Not necessarily; fatigue, existing joint damage, and non-inflammatory pain can remain even when inflammatory activity is lower.
