Dark yellow urine and gallstones

Gallstones are solid pieces that form in the gallbladder. If one moves into and blocks a bile duct, bile can build up and pigments may pass into urine, making it dark brown or tea-coloured rather than simply concentrated yellow. This may occur with yellowing of the skin or eyes and pale stools. Gallbladder attacks more often cause pain in the upper right or upper middle abdomen, sometimes with [Nausea](/symptoms/nausea/), [Vomiting](/symptoms/vomiting/), or [Indigestion](/symptoms/indigestion/). Dark urine by itself does not show that gallstones are present.

Record the urine shade, pain location, timing, meal triggers, fever, stool colour, and any yellowing. Arrange a [GP Consultation](/treatments/consultations-and-assessment/gp-consultation/) if the change persists or you have recurring upper abdominal discomfort. A clinician may examine you and decide whether urine tests, blood tests, or imaging are appropriate. Avoid self-diagnosing from urine colour, and do not start a restrictive diet without advice. Risk factors such as [Obesity](/conditions/obesity/) can be relevant to gallstone assessment but do not establish the cause of a symptom.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or persistent abdominal pain, fever or chills, repeated [Vomiting](/symptoms/vomiting/), yellow eyes or skin, pale stools, or dark urine with worsening illness. These features can indicate obstruction or infection of the bile system. Sudden severe upper abdominal pain that spreads to the back, particularly with vomiting, also needs urgent assessment because a blocked stone can be associated with [Pancreatitis](/conditions/pancreatitis/). Do not wait for urine colour to become lighter if these warning signs are present.

Ask whether your symptoms fit gallstones or another cause, which tests may clarify bile flow, and what pain or fever changes should prompt urgent care. Mention previous attacks, digestive symptoms, medicines, pregnancy possibility, and any yellowing or stool-colour change.
