Dark Spotting in Early Pregnancy: What to Know

Brown or dark discharge often reflects blood that has taken longer to leave the vagina. Light spotting can occur after sex or an examination because the cervix may bleed more easily during pregnancy. Other explanations include changes around the developing pregnancy, infection, or a problem that needs prompt assessment. The shade does not show whether the pregnancy is progressing normally.

Tell the clinician when the spotting began, whether it is becoming heavier, and whether you have cramps, one-sided pain, fever, dizziness, or shoulder-tip pain. A clinician may ask about your pregnancy dates and arrange an examination or scan.

Use a pad or liner so you can observe the amount and colour; avoid tampons while bleeding. Rest if you feel unwell, and keep a note of pain, clots, triggers, and any change in discharge. Contact your obstetric or maternity team for personalised advice, especially if the spotting continues or recurs. Do not start, stop, or change medicines without checking first.

If you also have unusual discharge, pain when urinating, or pelvic discomfort, mention these details because an infection such as Chlamydia may need testing and treatment.

Seek urgent medical assessment for heavy or increasing bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, fainting, marked dizziness, shoulder-tip pain, fever, or feeling seriously unwell. These warning symptoms need assessment regardless of how dark the blood looks. If you cannot reach your maternity team promptly, use local emergency services.
