Dark spotting after period: what it can mean

Blood can look brown or nearly black when it takes longer to leave the body and mixes with vaginal fluid. A small amount may appear as the final part of a period. Hormonal contraception, a change in contraception, stress, or an irregular cycle can also cause bleeding outside the expected pattern. Cervical irritation after sex and infections such as Chlamydia can cause spotting. Less commonly, growths such as Endometrial Polyps or Uterine Fibroids contribute to bleeding. Dark spotting is a symptom, not a diagnosis: it does not by itself show which cause is present.

Note when the spotting started, how long it lasted, how much appeared, and whether it followed sex, missed contraception, or a new medicine. A liner can help you observe the amount without inserting anything into the vagina. If pregnancy is possible, take a pregnancy test according to its instructions and tell the clinician the result. Arrange a routine appointment if the spotting returns, continues, happens after sex, or comes with unusual discharge, pelvic discomfort, or pain during sex. Your clinician may ask about cycles, contraception, pregnancy possibility and infection exposure, then decide whether an examination or tests are appropriate.

Seek urgent medical help if bleeding becomes heavy, you feel faint or weak, or you develop severe or one-sided pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, fever, or a new pregnancy with pain or bleeding. Prompt assessment is also sensible for bleeding after menopause or bleeding that keeps recurring. Cervical Dysplasia and Cervical Cancer can present with abnormal bleeding, although spotting has many other explanations. Do not wait for the colour to change before seeking help if you feel seriously unwell.
