Dark Spots Under Eyes Treatment: What to Know

Brown or grey colour may follow rubbing, eczema, allergy-related irritation, or earlier inflammation. Some people have inherited thin under-eye skin, through which blood vessels show more clearly; a hollow or tear-trough shadow can also look like a dark patch without being excess pigment. A clinician may examine both colour and texture before suggesting care. Broader pigment conditions such as melasma or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can affect nearby skin, while sun exposure can deepen visible colour.

Avoid rubbing, harsh scrubs, fragranced products, and untested lightening mixtures near the eyes. Use a gentle cleanser, moisturiser, and daily broad-spectrum sun protection on the surrounding skin, taking care not to get products in the eyes. Depending on the finding, a clinician may discuss a carefully selected skin-brightening treatment, chemical peel, or picosecond laser treatment. These procedures are not interchangeable, and the under-eye area may need conservative settings or a different approach altogether.

Arrange an assessment if the colour appears suddenly, affects one side, follows persistent itching or scaling, or comes with swelling, pain, discharge, or vision changes. Seek prompt medical care for significant eye pain, marked swelling, or a new change in vision. A dark area that is changing in shape or colour also deserves examination rather than cosmetic treatment first.

Ask whether the colour is pigment, shadow, visible vessels, or inflammation; whether an allergy or eczema treatment is needed; which ingredients are safe near your eyes; and what signs would mean you should stop a product or procedure.
