Short answer

A fungal skin condition can cause dark or light patches, especially when fine scale or mild itch accompanies the change in colour.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How fungus can affect colour

Tinea versicolor is an overgrowth of yeast that normally lives on skin. It commonly produces patches on the chest, back, neck, or upper arms; the patches may be darker, lighter, pinkish, or brown compared with nearby skin. Fine powdery scale may be easier to notice when the skin is gently scratched. Colour can remain uneven after the yeast is controlled, so persistent pigment does not by itself prove that infection is still active. Other causes include post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma, and sun spots.

What to do about suspected fungal patches

Keep the area cool and dry, change out of sweaty clothing, and avoid sharing towels or clothing. Do not rely on a pigment-lightening product to treat a possible infection. A clinician may confirm the diagnosis by examining the scale and skin pattern, then suggest an appropriate antifungal wash or cream. Follow the treatment instructions fully; the colour may take time to blend after the underlying condition improves. If the diagnosis is uncertain, avoid repeated self-treatment because irritation can create further darkening.

When to seek care

Book an assessment if patches are spreading, repeatedly returning, very itchy, inflamed, or not improving with an appropriate plan. Seek prompt attention for pain, pus, warmth, swelling, fever, or involvement of the eyes or mouth. A single changing or bleeding dark mark should also be examined because not every dark patch is fungal.

Questions for your doctor

Does the scale and distribution fit tinea versicolor? Could this be another cause of dark patches? How should I use the antifungal treatment, and what should I expect from the colour after treatment?
