Dark Spots Around the Eyes: What to Know

The skin around the eyes is thin and can look darker after rubbing, eczema, allergies, or irritation from cosmetics. Even brown patches on the upper cheeks and temples may fit melasma, while a mark after inflammation can be post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Sun spots are more often separate, defined marks on exposed skin. Colour can also look deeper with shadows or facial structure, so a mirror cannot establish the cause.

Stop any product that stings and cleanse gently without rubbing. Avoid applying strong acids, bleaching mixtures, or unprescribed steroid creams close to the eyes. Use sunglasses, shade, and suitable sunscreen around—not inside—the eye area. A dermatologist can distinguish pigment from irritation and discuss carefully selected products or procedures; chemical peels and laser treatments require extra caution near the eyes and professional protection.

Seek prompt medical care if darkening appears suddenly with swelling, redness, pain, discharge, vision change, or a new lump. Have a spot assessed if it bleeds, crusts, changes shape or colour, or affects only one eyelid and continues to evolve. Arrange routine dermatology advice for persistent itching, scaling, or pigment that remains despite stopping an irritant.

Ask whether the colour is pigment or shadow, whether allergy or eczema is contributing, which eye-area products are suitable, and what warning signs should prompt review. If treatment is discussed, ask how the eyes will be protected and how irritation will be reduced.
