What should you know about dark rash around mouth?

A rash may look darker after inflammation settles, particularly in deeper skin tones. Contact Dermatitis can follow toothpaste, cosmetics, fragrance, lip products, or saliva-related irritation. Atopic Dermatitis may be dry and itchy. Heat Rash and Intertrigo favour warm, moist areas, while Ringworm often forms a scaly edge. Psoriasis may be sharply defined, and Scabies is typically very itchy with symptoms in other areas.

A Drug Rash can begin after a new medicine and may extend beyond the mouth. Note the first day, products used, medicines started, and whether the rash is scaly, bumpy, burning, itchy, crusted, or spreading. Those observations are more useful than colour alone.

Pause newly introduced cosmetics, fragranced products, and harsh exfoliants. Rinse gently, pat dry, apply a bland moisturiser, and avoid licking, picking, or scrubbing the area. Do not use a steroid cream around the mouth unless a clinician has told you to; the wrong treatment can mask infection or aggravate some facial rashes.

Arrange an examination if the rash persists or returns. The clinician may recommend a targeted medicine after checking the border, scale, and surrounding skin. Keep a list of every product and medicine used near the mouth, including items applied only occasionally.

Seek prompt medical care for rapidly spreading redness or swelling, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, fever, severe pain, blisters, skin peeling, pus, or involvement of the eyes or inside the mouth. A rash after a new medicine also needs timely advice, especially when it is widespread or accompanied by feeling unwell.
