Itch suggests that the skin is still reacting, while brown or grey colour can remain after inflammation has settled. Deodorant, fragrance, shaving, friction, and trapped sweat can all irritate this fold. A scaly or spreading patch may point toward an inflammatory rash or tinea versicolor; a smooth mark that remains after a previous rash may be post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

The colour alone does not identify the cause. Note whether the spot is flat or raised, sharply outlined or blended, dry or moist, and whether similar marks occur elsewhere.
