Dark Circles and Crow's Feet: What to Know

Dark circles describe colour or shadow beneath or around the eyes. Crow's feet are fine lines at the outer corners that become more visible when smiling or squinting. Sun exposure, skin dryness, repeated facial movement, inherited structure, pigment, vessels, and tear-trough hollows can contribute in different combinations.

A lower-eye hollow can cast a shadow, while outer-corner lines come from movement and skin texture. Treating the hollow does not smooth every expression line, and treating lines does not necessarily change darkness. An examination should separate these targets before a plan is chosen.

Use broad-spectrum sun protection around the eyes when tolerated, wear suitable sunglasses, moisturize dry skin, and avoid rubbing. A clinician may discuss topical care, energy-based options, or injections depending on the line pattern and skin condition. Under-eye filler is a contour treatment, not a general solution for crow's feet.

Share your goals clearly: brighter colour, less hollowing, fewer lines, or a softer appearance while smiling. Ask about downtime, expected swelling, and whether treating one area could alter the balance of the other.

Arrange prompt assessment for eye pain, sudden swelling, discharge, marked redness, or a change in vision. A new rash, persistent itch, or rapidly changing one-sided appearance also deserves examination rather than cosmetic treatment alone.

Ask which feature is most prominent, whether your lines are mainly movement-related or present at rest, what can improve colour safely, and how the proposed treatment affects smiling and eyelid movement.
