Dark brown spotting between periods

Light bleeding may darken as it leaves the body slowly. Ovulation, contraception, missed pills, or changes in hormone levels can disturb the usual cycle. Chlamydia and other infections may irritate the cervix. Polyps or fibroids can cause irregular bleeding, while cervical dysplasia and cancers of the cervix or womb need consideration when bleeding is persistent, unusual, or associated with other warning signs.

Spotting can occur without pain, although cramps, pelvic pressure, discharge, or pain during sex may provide useful clues. Colour and amount alone do not establish a diagnosis.

Keep a simple record of cycle dates, spotting, flow, pain, sex, contraception, and discharge. Take a pregnancy test if pregnancy is possible. Book a clinician appointment when spotting repeats, lasts beyond a short episode, follows sex, or begins after menopause; the assessment may include an examination, infection testing, or imaging.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, fainting, severe dizziness, fever, or weakness. A positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding also warrants prompt assessment. Do not wait for a routine appointment if these symptoms develop.

Ask what might explain the pattern and whether you need pregnancy, infection, cervical, blood, or ultrasound testing. Bring your medication list and describe any cycle changes or menopause symptoms.
