What early spotting can mean

Brown spotting usually describes a small amount of older blood. In early pregnancy, the cervix can bleed more easily, including after sex or an examination. Other causes include infection or changes in the pregnancy, and the colour cannot distinguish among them.

Notice whether the spotting is only on wiping or needs a pad, whether it is increasing, and whether you have cramps, one-sided pain, shoulder pain, dizziness, faintness or fever. Tell the clinician how far along you are and whether the pregnancy has been confirmed.
