Dark brown spotting after your period: what to know

A small amount of blood can darken as it leaves the body, so brown marks near the end of menstruation are common. Spotting after a period can also be linked with hormonal contraception, ovulation, cervical irritation, infection or growths such as polyps and fibroids. The pattern matters more than the colour alone.

Think about whether this is the first episode, whether it followed sex, and whether your period has changed in timing, flow or pain. Pelvic discomfort, unusual smell, itching or fever should be included in your description.

Use a liner if helpful and note the dates, amount and triggers. Book a non-urgent appointment if spotting lasts beyond the end of your period, returns over several cycles or worries you. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe or worsening pain, fainting, dizziness, fever, or a possible pregnancy with bleeding. Arrange prompt evaluation for bleeding after sex that keeps happening or any bleeding after menopause.
