What should you know about DAP plaster of paris?

A clinician wets plaster bandage, shapes it around the limb, and allows it to set. The finished cast limits movement so bones, joints, or soft tissues can rest in a stable position. It may be used after an injury or as part of staged correction, including clubfoot care. A plaster cast is usually checked while it is drying because pressure, swelling, or an awkward edge can affect comfort and circulation.

Keep the cast dry and do not place objects inside it to scratch. Follow the prescribed activity and elevation instructions, especially when swelling is present. Move the free fingers or toes gently if your clinician has allowed this, and inspect them for colour, warmth, sensation, and movement. Do not trim, loosen, or reinforce the cast yourself. A damaged or wet cast may no longer give the intended support; contact the treating service for advice.

Seek prompt medical advice for worsening or unrelenting pain, marked swelling, numbness, tingling, unusual coldness, or fingers or toes that look pale or blue. Contact the clinic if the cast cracks, becomes loose, develops a wet soft area, rubs the skin, or develops an unpleasant smell. Sudden chest symptoms or difficulty breathing need emergency care.

Ask how long the cast is expected to stay on, which activities are allowed, and how to protect it during washing. Clarify which changes in sensation or swelling are urgent, when follow-up is planned, and whether you need an adjustment or a replacement if the cast becomes loose.
