Plaster of Paris is a powder that reacts with water and hardens into a solid gypsum material. Medical casts use materials selected for skin contact, moulding, setting behaviour, strength, and clinical handling. An interior wall or craft product may contain additives or have manufacturing controls that are not intended for a patient’s skin or wound. The label name and package size do not establish medical suitability, sterility, or compatibility with an injury.

Do not apply household plaster to a person or use it to repair a medical cast. A trained clinician should choose and apply casting material after checking the injury, swelling, circulation, skin, and required support. Keep any powder dry, avoid breathing dust, and follow the product’s handling instructions. If you already have a cast, keep it dry and do not trim, pad, or tighten it yourself. Medical casting may be used in fracture care or staged correction, but the material and technique must be clinical.

Seek prompt cast review for increasing pain or pressure, numbness, tingling, pale or blue fingers or toes, unusual coldness, worsening swelling, wet or cracked plaster, foul odour, or skin rubbing. Urgent assessment is needed for severe pain with loss of movement or sensation. These signs can indicate that swelling, circulation, alignment, or skin protection needs attention.

Ask which medical-grade material is being used, how long it should remain in place, how to protect it during washing, and which circulation or skin changes require review. For a child’s corrective cast, ask how movement, growth, and follow-up will be checked.
