What should you know about daily sneezing and runny nose?

Allergic rhinitis may cause repeated sneezing, an itchy nose, watery eyes and clear discharge, often after exposure to pollen, house dust mites or pets. A common cold, influenza or COVID-19 can cause a runny nose alongside sore throat, cough, fever or tiredness. Sinusitis is more suggestive when blocked or discoloured nasal mucus occurs with facial pressure or reduced smell. Symptoms can overlap, so a runny nose does not identify one condition by itself.

Note where you are and what you were exposed to when symptoms start, including dust, pets, cleaning products or outdoor air. Saline nasal rinsing may help clear mucus when performed with suitable sterile or previously boiled and cooled water. Wash hands, avoid sharing towels and ventilate rooms. A pharmacist can advise whether an antihistamine or nasal spray suits you; use decongestant sprays only as directed because prolonged use can worsen blockage. Seek review if symptoms continue, disturb sleep or affect work and school.

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, confusion or a severe headache with a stiff neck. Arrange prompt assessment for swelling around an eye, severe facial pain, persistent high fever, repeated nosebleeds or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling.
