Cystoscopy with transurethral resection of the prostate

The surgeon passes a resectoscope through the penis and urethra to see the prostate channel and bladder. A cutting instrument removes pieces of prostate tissue that narrow the urine pathway, while energy seals bleeding vessels. There is no external surgical cut. The operation is commonly used to improve urinary obstruction from prostate enlargement. Removed tissue can be sent to pathology; this may reveal benign enlargement, inflammation, or an unexpected abnormality that needs separate discussion.

Tell the surgical team about blood-thinning medicines, urinary infection symptoms, previous anaesthetic problems, implants, and all current medicines or supplements. Use only the medication and fasting instructions provided for your case. A urinary catheter is usually placed after surgery to allow drainage and may be connected to bladder irrigation while bleeding settles. At home, avoid heavy lifting and straining as directed, prevent constipation, take prescribed medicines correctly, and drink fluids if your team has not restricted them for another medical reason.

Urinary urgency, stinging, and some blood in the urine can occur as the operated area heals. Get prompt advice if symptoms intensify, bleeding becomes brighter or heavier, or pain is not controlled by the recommended medicine. Urgent assessment is needed for inability to urinate, a catheter that is not draining with increasing bladder discomfort, large clots, fever with chills, confusion, fainting, chest pain, breathing difficulty, or severe lower-abdominal pain.

Ask what is causing the blockage, what improvement is realistic for your urine flow, and whether other approaches fit your prostate size and health. Discuss possible effects on ejaculation, erections, continence, urethral narrowing, and the chance of needing further treatment. Confirm the catheter plan, activity restrictions, pathology arrangements, and follow-up date. If cancer was already suspected, ask whether this operation is intended to relieve blockage, establish a diagnosis, or form part of a broader treatment plan.
