What should you know about cyberknife radiation for prostate cancer?

Despite its name, it does not cut the body. It is a platform for stereotactic body radiotherapy, which gives precisely planned radiation from many angles while tracking the prostate’s position.

The team maps the prostate, tumour target and nearby structures such as the bladder and rectum. Small markers may be placed in or near the prostate to support tracking, and some patients may be offered a spacer to increase separation from the rectum. A planning scan defines the radiation paths and dose limits.

Suitability depends on the cancer’s risk features and extent, prostate size, urinary function, previous pelvic treatment and general health. Hormone therapy may form part of the wider plan for some patients. Other reasonable options can include different radiotherapy techniques, brachytherapy, surgery or active surveillance, depending on the clinical situation.

Follow the treatment centre’s bladder-filling and bowel-preparation instructions because consistent internal anatomy helps accurate targeting. Tell the team about urinary medicines, blood thinners, implanted devices and any difficulty lying still. During delivery, you lie on a treatment couch while imaging checks position; the radiation itself cannot be felt.

Temporary urinary frequency, urgency, weaker flow, bowel looseness, rectal irritation and fatigue can develop during or after treatment. Later effects may include persistent urinary or bowel changes and changes in erections. Report symptoms early because medicines, hydration advice and other supportive measures may help.

Contact the treatment team the same day if you cannot pass urine, develop increasing blood in urine or stool, have severe pelvic pain, or cannot maintain fluids because of bowel symptoms. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, fainting, chest pain or severe breathing difficulty. Fever with shaking chills also needs prompt assessment, particularly after an invasive preparation procedure.
