Heat rash, also called prickly heat or miliaria, develops when sweat is trapped near the surface of the skin. Adults may notice small bumps, redness, stinging, or itch in covered or sweaty areas such as the neck, chest, back, groin, or skin folds. It is different from an allergy, although other rashes can look similar.

Move to a cooler setting, wear loose breathable clothing, and gently wash away sweat before patting the area dry. Avoid oily products, vigorous scrubbing, and activities that repeatedly heat or rub the skin. A cool damp cloth can soothe discomfort. Emollient therapy may help when surrounding skin is dry, while topical corticosteroids should be used only when a clinician recommends the product and strength.
