What should you know about CrossFit and rhabdo?

Short answer
CrossFit can trigger rhabdomyolysis when intense, unfamiliar exercise damages muscle faster than the body can clear its contents.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main concern
- Muscle breakdown after unusually intense exercise
- Key warning sign
- Dark urine with severe muscle symptoms
What rhabdomyolysis means
Rhabdomyolysis is the breakdown of muscle tissue. Muscle proteins and other substances can enter the bloodstream and place strain on the kidneys. It may follow a demanding workout, especially when the session is far beyond your usual training, recovery is limited, or heat and dehydration add stress.
Ordinary post-exercise soreness often develops later and gradually settles. Rhabdomyolysis may bring unusually severe muscle pain, swelling, weakness, marked tenderness, or urine that looks dark. Symptoms can affect the muscles used during the workout, but the appearance of symptoms varies.
What to do after a hard workout
Stop the workout if pain feels extreme or your strength is unexpectedly reduced. Do not try to train through swelling, weakness, or dark urine. Arrange prompt medical assessment and explain the workout intensity, heat exposure, fluid intake, supplements, and the time symptoms began.
A clinician may examine you and use blood and urine tests to assess muscle injury and kidney function. Until assessed, avoid strenuous exercise and avoid taking medicines or supplements for the problem unless a clinician advises you. Sip fluids normally if you can drink safely, but do not rely on home hydration to treat suspected rhabdomyolysis.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent medical care for dark or tea-coloured urine, very little urine, severe or worsening muscle pain, substantial swelling, profound weakness, vomiting, confusion, fainting, or trouble breathing. These signs need assessment because muscle breakdown can affect fluid balance and kidney function.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Could my symptoms represent rhabdomyolysis rather than expected soreness? Which tests are needed? When can I safely resume training? How should my coach adjust intensity, rest, heat exposure, and hydration?

Questions people ask
Can normal soreness become rhabdomyolysis?
Soreness itself is not rhabdomyolysis, but severe symptoms after unusually intense exercise deserve medical assessment.
Should I complete the workout if I feel weak?
No. Stop and seek advice, particularly when weakness occurs with swelling, severe pain, or dark urine.
