Crohn's disease and throat symptoms

Crohn's disease mainly affects the digestive tract, but inflammation can also be associated with mouth sores or discomfort higher in the digestive system. Throat pain, a lump sensation, hoarseness, or difficulty swallowing more often has another explanation, such as reflux, infection, allergy, irritation, or a medicine effect. The timing and exact symptom matter.

Tell a clinician whether symptoms occur with mouth ulcers, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, heartburn, fever, or a change in medication. Difficulty swallowing is different from a scratchy sore throat and deserves careful description.

Arrange a GP Consultation for persistent throat discomfort, repeated mouth ulcers, painful swallowing, or symptoms that began after a new medicine. Note foods, drinks, reflux, smoking or vaping exposure, fever, and whether swallowing solids or liquids is harder. A clinician can examine your mouth and throat and decide whether your Crohn's history changes the next step.

A Blood Test may be considered when there are broader symptoms such as ongoing fatigue, fever, or suspected inflammation. Keep drinking fluids if swallowing is comfortable, avoid known irritants, and do not stop prescribed treatment without advice.

Seek emergency help for difficulty breathing, rapidly increasing throat or tongue swelling, inability to swallow saliva, choking, severe dehydration, or a sudden voice change with swelling. Seek prompt assessment for painful swallowing that is worsening, blood, persistent fever, or inability to eat and drink.
