Crohn's disease treatment for children

Crohn's disease can cause abdominal pain, diarrhoea, tiredness, poor appetite, or slowed growth. Most children with Crohn's disease have gastrointestinal symptoms, but abdominal pain or diarrhoea in a child can have many causes and does not by itself confirm Crohn's disease. Clinicians consider symptoms alongside examination, growth pattern, nutrition, blood results, stool assessment, and bowel investigations.

Treatment may include nutritional support, medicines to reduce inflammation, and regular review. The plan aims to settle symptoms while supporting normal growth, school attendance, activity, and emotional wellbeing. Children should not be given or stopped from taking treatment without advice from their clinical team.

Bring a list of medicines and note pain, diarrhoea, blood, appetite, energy, sleep, and missed school days. Keep appointments for growth and treatment monitoring, even after symptoms improve. Encourage fluids and the eating plan agreed with the care team. Ask about school arrangements, activity, vaccinations, and how to manage medicine doses when the child is unwell. Contact the care team promptly for persistent diarrhoea, worsening pain, blood in the stool, fever, reduced drinking, or a clear drop in energy. Seek urgent care if the child has severe pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, faintness, confusion, or cannot keep fluids down. Signs of dehydration include very little urine, a dry mouth, unusual sleepiness, or dizziness. Do not wait for a routine appointment when these warning signs appear.
